The United States Marine Corps approached Beretta asking for modifications to their M9 pistols.

Among other things, they were looking for an accessory rail to attach tactical lighting as well as laser aiming devices. In 2006, the M9A1 was fielded as an answer, and in 2016 Beretta is pleased to introduce this 22LR caliber faithful reproduction of the M9A1. The M9A1 is a faithful copy of the Marines M9A1 but is now chambered in 22LR for plinking at the range and or as a trainer for the 9mm version. The Beretta M9A1 features a 1913 picatinny rail for use with illumination devices as well as lasers. The M9A1 is availble in either a 10 round version for state compliancy or a 15 round version.
